Frequently asked questions (FAQS)

Each race varies based on the venue, to make the most of the brilliant surrounding landscapes. We try to design the course to loop back to the Event Centre several times during the race. Race specific information will be provided in the competitors pre-event information that will be available the week prior to the race.

Teams will compete on a combination of courses with the aid of a printed map provided by the race organisers.

The Pack Challenge will be mostly marked but there may be some sections that self navigation is required. Teams would be expected to navigate using the map and landmarks. No compass would be required.

The Wolf Cub Challenge will be a fully marked course but maps will be provided for more information.

We recommend that you use a mountain bike with a suitable off-road tyre since the majority of the event is off road on either gravel tracks or single track. However, a gravel bike is also an option for our races and this depends on you and your skill level. We want everyone to take part in our races and we don’t want some to be prevented from taking part if they may not have the correct bike.

Parents can also use bike trailers, bike seats or adaptive systems for the bike legs.

Please contact us if you are concerned and we can discuss your bike with you.

Yes for sure just see the criteria above. Please note to be fair you will not be officially ranked in the race or series championship.

Whenever you are on your bike a cycle helmet must be worn. There is no exception.

The moutain biking won’t be technical, although we do aim to include a variety of terrains. There may be some steep sections, both uphill and downhill where you may be more comfortable to dismount your bike and push, this is absolutely fine. We aim to provide a challenge for everyone so it’s important to know your own limit.

We will provide a full briefing on the morning and marked maps will be on display highlighting the areas that are of a higher difficulty. Each event will vary in technicality, length & incline.

If you are uninjured and able to continue until the next marshal, then this marshall will assist you in getting back to the event centre at the end of the event. It is important that you come back to the event centre to inform us that you are okay, and so we don’t send out a search party.

The Pack Challenge (and the Wolf Cub challenge) is a team event for 2-4 people. Each team is required to have at least one responsible adult.

There are no set age limits for The Pack Challenge. We ask that you carefully consider the distances and decide whether this is an achievable challenge for yourselves and your team. For our younger competitors, The Wolf Cub challenge has been designed to provide the same sense of adventure over smaller distances.

Please carefully consider which distance will suit your team the best.

Yes, the rules state that you must be within sound and sight shot of all team members at all times. The challenge is to get all members of the team through the course. Helping each other out is strongly encouraged in Adventure Racing – consider carrying kit for each other or towing one another on the bike.

The Pack Challenges are designed so that you visit the Event Centre in between each phase as well as for the start and finish therefore your supporters will generally get the best all-round view from there.  However each event will vary in course design so we include tailored recommendations for supports in the pre-event information pack, and you can always ask the team on the day.

No, not at all. The boats we use are very stable and we provide safety and instruction on the water. It might make your experience more pleasurable if you have had some experience in advance.

if the race includes a Kayaking stage we provide single and double sit on top kayaks with paddles and buoyancy aids for all competitors. If you are racing in a pair or in a team with an even number of competitors, you will receive a double(s). If you are racing in a team of three you will receive a single and a double. If one member of the team of three is very young you will then all go in the one double. You do not need to bring anything specific for the kayaking section although some people like to put on a pair of waterproof trousers to keep their bottoms dry for the remainder of the event!

All kayaks will be provided by us – this ensures the event is fair and safe for all.
